Summary form only given. We propose a novel concept based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) for multiplexing two or more wavelength bands or broadcast wavelengths with low loss and low crosstalk. A special component for a PON upgrade application has been realized. This device distributes and multiplexes a common wavelength (1.3 /spl mu/m) onto an equidistant distributed eight-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) spectrum (1.55 /spl mu/m). The main topic reported is the special new MUX component in combination with the 1/N distribution function. The design makes use of the two basic properties of an AWG spectrometer, namely the image property between input and output and the wavelength shifted image in the output due to the incorporated waveguide grating.
