An in-house project of the Institute of Gas Technology has developed an advanced system of energy recovery for high-temperature furnace applications that engineering evaluations show gives an 18-40% energy savings. The Thermochemical Recuperator (TCR) system recovers heat by promoting heat-absorbing chemical reactions in the fuel, in addition to sensible heat recovery of the combustion air. The heat absorbed by the chemical reactions, at about 1300 to 1500 deg. F., enhances the heating value of the fuel and is released at flame temperature. The authors introduce the concept, outline the operating principles, and present its operating advantages. Initial economic assessment indicates that the TCR will be a preferred option when fully developed. 1 figure, 5 tables.
