Avascular necrosis in both hips in a patient with transfusion dependent β-thalassaemia

A 51-year-old woman with a 3-year history of painful hips presented to our mineral metabolism service having been referred by her general practitioner. The pain was present at rest and made worse by more vigorous movement; she used crutches to walk.
