Abstract The enolate anions of 5‐alkylbarbituric acids and isopropylidene alkylmalonates are demonstrated to readily displace chloro, pyridinio, and acetoxy substituents from the 4‐position of simple pyridine derivatives under conditions in which the ring nitrogen carries a positive charge.
