Hemorrhage of the optic disk in normal-tension glaucoma

As we cross into a new millennium, it is tempting to join all the others who are considering what the most significant past events have been in their field of interest. For the discipline of glaucoma, it would probably be safe to say that Helmholtz’s introduction of the ophthalmoscope in 1851 was the most defining moment. Not only did it usher in the modern era of glaucoma, but it provided the first clinical means of evaluating and studying the optic neuropathies that we call the glaucomas.
