Objective To find out the effective methods of reducing recurrent rate after ptergium excision. Methods Thirty-six cases(43 eyes) were treated by only pterygium excision with backward dissociation from neck(group A) and 51 cases(68 eyes) plus 90 Sr β-rays irradiation after operation(group B).The curative effect was analysed retrospectively. The setimate criterion was the growths of fibrovascular tissue.Follow up ranged from 10 to 24 months(mean 13 months). Results In group A,21 cases(29 eyes,67.4%) were cured during the follow-up time,5 eyes(latency recurrence) had fibrovascular tissue hyperplasia,9 eyes(20.9%) had really recurrence. In group B,57 eyes(83.8%) were cured during the follow-up time,4 eyes(latency recurrence) had fibrovascular tissue hyperplasia,7 eyes(10.3%) had really recurrence. The effect rates in the two groups had apparent difference. Conclusion 90 Sr β-rays irradiation applicater after ptergium excision with backward dissociation from neck can prevent pterygium recurrence, which is safe and simple.
