Map Generalization Algorithm Research Based on Circle Characters

In this paper, we analyze statuses, effects and developments of map generalization, and introduce basic character of the Survival of Fittesttheory. We recognize that there are many similar characters between nature development and process of map generalization, and prefer to takethe Survival of Fittesttheory to map generalization. Also we take care of traits of Circle Principle. The applications of using this theory and principle to generalize map features are expounded in details. Several map generalization methods such as selecting, simplifying and merging have been put forward and relevant examples are given.
