The materials thermal stabilities of lithium ion batteries are correlated to the safety of lithium ion battery. The materials thermal stability of lithium ion batteries was evluated by a C 80 micro calorimeter. The typical electrolyte 1.0 mol/L LiPF6/PC+DMC, delithiated Li0.5CoO2 and lithiated graphite Li0.84C6 were studied at 0.2 ℃/min heating rate in argon filled vessel. The thermodynamics and kinetics were detected and calculated based on the C 80 test. The results show that C 80 method is an easy, safe and economic way to evaluate the materials thermal risk of lithium ion batteries.
