Objective To prepare collagen/polyvinyl alcohol compound gel scaffold and to evaluate its cell compatibility and biocompatibility preliminary. Methods Collagen and polyvinyl alcohol were mixed in liquid, and then freeze-dried to prepare collagen/polyvinyl alcohol compound gel scaffold. The L-929 cells were seeded on the scaffold surface, then the number of adherent cells were counted in the inverted phase contrast microscope and the cell morphology was observed under the electron microscope. The cytotoxicity of compound gel was evaluated with MTT method. The biocompatibility was evaluated by implanting the gel into leg muscle of SD rats, then taking the tissue sample at 2,8,12 weeks after implantion, observing the histological changes. Results L-929 cells were adhered to collagen/polyvinyl alcohol compound gel scaffold after seeding, the number of adherent cells was increased following the time lasting. The cytotoxicity were between grade 0 to Ⅰ.The formation of inflammatory infiltration and fibrous capsule were observed at early implation, the situation was improved as the time prolong. Conclusion Collagen/polyvinyl alcohol compound gel has good cell compatibility and biocompatibility.
