The results of the Empagliflozin Cardiovascular Outcome Event Trial in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients–Removing Excess Glucose (EMPA-REG OUTCOME) study have generated excitement among diabetologists and a resurgence in confidence that we can develop medications that reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It became the first-ever study of a T2DM drug to conclusively show an impact on the risk of clinical cardiovascular events, and was soon hailed as a landmark study.
