The study on T-cell and its subsets for 25 Chronic renal failure (CRF) patients before and after hemodialysis was performed. The double bridge immunocytochemistry using alkaline-phosphatase-anti-alkaline phosphatase {APAAP) complex was employed in the peripheral blood. The percentage of the total T-lymphocyte (T1{), helper/inducer T-lymphocyte (T4{) and suppressor T-lymphocyte (T8{) and the ratio of T4{/T8{ were obtained with the control group of 28 normal persons. 1) The CRF patients showed decreased levels of the total T-lymphocyte (T1{) and helper/inducer T-lymphocyte (T4{) compared to control group (p<0.05). 2) There was no significant statistical difference in suppressor T-lymphocyte (T8{) and the ratio T4{/T8{ between the CRF patients and the control group. 3) The levels of total T-lymphocyte (T1{) and helper/inducer- T-lymphocyte (T4{) increase significantly after hemodialysis (p < 0.05). 4) The level of suppressor T-lymphocyte (T8) didn't change but the ratio of T4{/T8{ increased significantly after hemodialysis (p < 0.05).In conclusion, the levels of total lymphocyte (T1{) and helper/inducer T-lymphocyte (4{) of the CRF patients were lower than those of the normal control group. After hemodialysis, the levels of total T-lymphocyte (T1{) and helper/inducer T-lymphocyte (T4{) and the ratio of T4{/T8{ increased to subnormal, but there was no change in the level of suppressor T-lymphocyte (T8{). Therefore, these results suggest that hemodialysis increase the immunological status of the CRF patients.
