This paper presents a brief summary of air pollution development on the island of Taiwan.A more detailed account appears in Chow, et al. 1 Taiwan, the Republic of China, is an island located 184 km east of the South China coast with an area of approximately 35,000 km 2 and a population of approximately 18,000,000. 2 Over the past 20 years, Taiwan has devoted considerable efforts to industrialization and economic development.Four major factors have caused the air pollution concentration to increase dramatically over the last two decades: (1) the substantial increase in the number of industries on the island; (2) the combustion of fuel oil, coal and wood; (3) automobile exhaust emissions; and (4) high population density. As a result, the effect of environmental pollution upon health has been perceived as a major problem in recent years. 3ll environmental programs in Taiwan are government sponsored. The Bureau of Environmental Protection (BEP) under the Department of Health in the Executive Yuan (Branch) of the central government is empowered with overseeing environmental affairs and is responsible for enforcing and amending the environmental laws and regulations. Ambient Standards, Emission Standards, and ConcentrationsFilter performance characteristics of interest include collection efficiency as a function of particle size and flow rate at a given pressure drop or pressure drop at a given flow rate. The
