Observations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over the western United States

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been investigated by means of continuous infrared analysis from an aircraft over the western United States. A 2-ppm difference in CO2 in the air between the west coast and interior areas in noted. The vertical carbon dioxide gradient over the Los Angeles area indicates a source of CO2 at the surface.
