Fructose-1-Phosphate Aldolase and Fructose-1-6-Diphosphate Aldolase Activity in the Mucosa of the Intestine in Hereditary Fructose Intolerance

The activity of fructose-1-phosphate aldolase and of fructose-1-6-diphosphate aldolase has been measured in biopsies of intestinal mucosa from two patients with hereditary fructose intolerance and from seven normal persons. The biopsies from the patients with hereditary fructose intolerance showed fructose-1-phosphate aldolase activities which were less than 10 per cent of normal. Their fructose-1-6-phosphate aldolase activities were normal.It is suggested that the low fructose-1-phosphate aldolase activity is the cause of the gastrointestinal symptoms provoked by fructose ingestion in this disease.
