摘要
This chapter describes two of the basic methods of interferometer demodulation. First is the active homodyne approach, which although not applicable to most real-world systems has had widespread use in the laboratory and may be described as the “beginners” demodulator. The second demodulation approach has no electrical components in the interferometer, and because of this and the fact that the approach does not form a feedback loop to the interferometer, this is termed a passive approach. Some of the basic noise sources are also described in the chapter, including a brief discussion of semiconductor diode laser noise properties. The problem of polarization fading is discussed, and various approaches to overcome this problem are listed. The chapter provides various interferometer configurations: Mach- Zehnder, Michelson, reflectometric, and Fabry-Perot. Also, a number of implementations, such as gradiometers and push-pull designs, are discussed. Finally, some of the important applications of this technology are given.
