Concepts for the study of regional culture

This article proposes a terminology and conceptual framework for studying culture in internally differentiated regional spaces. In the first section I discuss the insights and limitations of regional analysis, poststructuralist theory, and Marxist geography regarding the study of regional culture. I then develop the idea of regional culture as culture in power regions; I propose several concepts that specify key areas for the ethnographic description of regional culture and hegemony. The utility of this framework is illustrated with examples from two Mexican regions.
