Polymerization is a chemical reaction where monomers, reacting to each other with covalent bonds via functional groups, are forming the polymer molecules, macromolecules. Whether will arise homopolymer or copolymer depends on the type of repeated units. The homopolymers are formed by reaction of the same monomers, while the copolymers are formed by reaction of two or more different monomers. A copolymerization reaction is called the simultaneous polymerization of two or more different monomers in the same reaction compound. The aim of this work is the synthesis of dodecyl methacrylate and 2-N-morpholinoethyl methacrylatecopolymers and determination of monomer reactivity ratios. Copolymer of poly(dodecyl-co-2-N-morpholyno-methacrylate) (DDMA/2NMEM), with different mole fractions of monomers (90/10; 80/20; 70/30; 60/40; 50/50; 40/60; 30/70; 20/80;) was synthesized, to low conversions. Tert-butylperoxy 2-ethylhexanoate was used as initiator. Prepared copolymers were characterised in order to determine copolymer composition, initial polymerization rate and copolymerization reactivity ratios. Copolymer compositions were determined by 1H nuclear . magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) from integrals of characteristic signals. It has been found that the composition of the copolymer deviates very little from the initial composition of the monomer compound. The reactivity ratios of copolymerization were determined by linear Kelen-Tudős method and non-linear Tidwell-Mortimer method. The values of the copolymerization reactivity ratiosof monomers are relatively close and approximately equal to one so copolymerization si close to ideal copolymerization, with a slightly higher reactivity of 2-N-morpholinoethyl methacrylate monomer.
