Concrete armour units, together with rock armour, are commonly used to protect coastal rubble structures along the coastline of New South Wales. Where primary armour has had to be designed to be over 15 tonnes, the tendency has been to investigate the feasibility of using concrete armour units. Although comparative performance assessments have been carried out in previous model investigations, most have been for breakwater trunks and not for the head. In this paper the stability of single layer armour units such as the Accropode is compared with the performance of rock armour.
