This chapter discusses the preparation process of glass-based materials. One of the applications of glass materials is that of optical functional materials, owing to its good transparency and good formability. In the field of glass research, the interaction with quantum beam is roughly classified into three parts: radiation shielding typified by lead-containing glass; defect generation by quantum beam irradiation; and prompt and storage emission by quantum beam irradiation. The chapter presents the radiation-induced defect formation. Studies of glass scintillator have a long history, particularly those of non-oxide systems. The chapter provides the details of non-oxide glasses, and describes the scintillation from oxide-based glasses. It describes radiophotoluminescence (RPL) in glasses from the compositional viewpoint. RPL is a luminescence owing to electronic transitions within luminescent centers which are generated in phosphors by ionizing radiation. Important in the glass manufacturing process is control of trace amounts of impurities from the manufacturing process as well as the starting material.
