Studies on the Optimum Carbon Sources and Trophic Modes of Chlorella sp.

The effects of different carbon sources and trophic modes on the growth of Chlorella sp were investigated. The re- sults showed that the optimum carbon source of Chlorella sp. growth was glucose. Chlorella sp. could grow under conditions of chemoheterotrophic, light-activated heterotrophic, photoheterotrophic or mixotrophic modes. But the specific growth rate of Chlorella sp. decreased in the order of mixotrophy, photoheterotrophy, light-activated heterotrophic growth, chemoheterotrophy and photoautotrophy. The specific growth rate of the Chlorella sp. tested in mixotrophic culture was the sum of that under photoautotrophic growth and photoheterotrophic conditions.
