Trying to teach problem-solving instead of just assigning it: some practical issues

Several of our students lack deliberate methods for attacking problems when the solutions are not obvious. Instead, their approach often devolves to making random changes to their first attempt with the hope that a correct solution will evolve into existence. We created a first-semester Problem Solving course to make them aware of the steps they need to follow when solving problems. Several practical issues that arise for this kind of course are discussed.
