China has the largest population of children and youth in the world, and its schooling system lays great emphasis upon conducts and strict disciplining of the students. However, school bullying did not receive attention from the academic community in China until the very end of the 20th century—some 20 years later than Professor Dan Olweus's pioneering work in Norway. Recently, Chinese researchers have made several areas of progress in bullying research and anti-bullying intervention. In terms of the risk factors and mechanisms of bullying, Chinese researchers have focused on how contextual variables such as classroom contexts interact with individual characteristics in predicting the occurrence, maintenance, and cessation of bullying, as well as the genetic mechanisms underlying the bullying behavior and victimization-maladjustment link. As an essential step in developing an evidence-based intervention program, the effectiveness of the 3H anti-bullying program was evaluated through empirical research.
