Carcinoma of the Islets of Langerhans with Hyperinsulinism

THREE years after the isolation of insulin by Banting and Best1 in 1921, Harris2 formulated the concept of hyperinsulinism. In 1927 Wilder3 reported the first recognized case. Since then over 150 cases of benign insulin-producing tumor have been reported. Unequivocal cases of carcinoma of the islets of Langerhans are unusual; we have been able to collect 23 such cases from the literature.4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 In 16 of these, hypoglycemia was observed.
