Isotope Exchange and Isotope Effects

Isotopes are valuable tool for enzyme kinetic studies. From isotope exchange kinetics information about multi-substrate reaction mechanisms can be gained. The primary kinetic isotope effect is strongest with tritium, but due to its high concentration deuterium is frequently applied, while the effects of isotopes of other atoms are minor. The primary, but also the weaker secondary isotope effect are helpful in the investigation of the catalytic reaction.
