Carbon dioxide has been reduced at metal porphyrin-modified electrodes in the presence of homogeneous catalysts. The most effective mediator was CoII TPP, followed by NiII TPP, FeIII TPPCl, FeII TPP and CrIII TPPCl in that order. The reduction of CO2 was observed at potentials more negative than −0.5 V vs. SCE with current efficiencies of 1.5 to 15.1%. The CO2 reduction was induced by the transformation of metal porphyrin to its oxidized form (MTPP+), and an external source of energy was required to rereduce MTPP+ to the active mediator.
