An axial hybrid magnetic bearing (AHMB) with the slice stator for the magnetic suspension centrifugal compressor (MSCC) is presented in this article. With the advantages of short axial length, high axial bearing capacity, small thrust disk, and easy installation, this structure is suitable for the requirements of high-speed MSCCs. First, the accurate stator region segmentation method is used to establish the equivalent magnetic circuit model, which overcomes the error caused by the complex magnetic leakage path and the nonlinear stator material of the existing model due to the slice stator. Then, it is found that the internal layout of the stator affects the magnetic circuit distribution of the stator combined with the improved magnetic circuit model, which has a significant impact on the performance of the magnetic bearing. The optimum internal structure of the AHMB with the slice stator is proposed. Finally, the proposed AHMB is manufactured and assembled into the prototype of the MSCC, where the force–current experiment and the speed-up experiment are performed. Simulation and experimental results validate that the proposed AHMB and the improved magnetic circuit model can effectively work for the MSCC.
