Use of enzymes for different applications, however, still has some challenges. Recent advances in the preparation of nanoparticles with their unique physicochemical properties including the high specific surface area and reactivity resulted from the significantly increased surface/bulk atom ratio have made nanoparticles very attractive carriers for enzyme immobilization. The enzymes immobilized on nanoparticles (EnNPs) are generally more stable and robust than their free counterparts due to their fixed conformation. The unique intrinsic properties of nanoparticles also confer the EnNPs to broader areas of application. This review emphasizes on the recent development of enzyme immobilization on nanoparticles and their applications in the field of biomedicine, biosensors, and biofuel production.
