Review: Endocytosis is a finely regulated process that controls multiple cellular functions. To realise these different roles, various endocytic mechanisms have evolved in the cell requiring specialised molecular machineries and specific sets of endocytic adaptor proteins. This review provides an overview of some specialised functions of the endocytic machinery in different cell physiological processes and in cancer, focusing mainly on two endocytic protein families, dynamins and epsins.
