Progress in rare earth oxides doped ZrO_2-based ceramic materials for thermal barrier coatings

Thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) was used to improve the durability of aircraft gas turbine,which increases the component lifetime as well as allows higher engine temperature and better efficiency.The progresses in rare earth oxides doped ZrO2-based ceramic materials for thermal barrier coatings are summarized.It is pointed out that LnO1.5-Ta2O5(or Nb2O5)-YSZ ceramic not only increases the working temperature of TBCs,but also reduces their thermal conductivity.These results indicate that LnO1.5-Ta2O5(or Nb2O5)-YSZ ceramic can be used as the candidate material for the ceramic layer in thermal barrier coating systems.
