Evaluation of The Effects of Carthanus Tinctorius L. on Bone Regeneration

Background: Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract has long been used in Oriental medicine, and its safety and effects have been shown experimentally. The aim of this review is to describe the processing methods, mechanism, dosage, and carrier for Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extracts and to summarize the in vivo effects on bone regeneration. Materials and methods: Literature review regarding Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extracts was performed to find out about the effects on various models. Results: Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract is reported to have effects on bone diseases, such as fractures, osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and bone metabolism. Many studies have demonstrated the bone promoting effect of the systemic and local application of Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract in various models. Different doses may result in various effects and should be chosen with caution after considering the benefits and risks. Conclusion: A number of studies have demonstrated the potential for Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract to increase bone regeneration. Although relatively abundant information about Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract has indicated its possible beneficial effect on bone, both in the preclinical and clinical field, the effects of Carthamus tinctorius L. seed extract may be influenced by a range of factors, including the processing method, method of administration, duration of exposure, and experimental animal model. Further research is needed to determine its optimal therapeutic threshold, mode of application, and effectiveness in humans for bone regeneration
