摘要
We study whether shocks from local natural disasters can leave durable organizational traces in young high-growth ventures. In principle, such firms may be relatively resilient to localized disruption because they are designed to scale beyond local markets and rely heavily on knowledge-based assets. We examine this possibility using a panel of 19,984 U.S. startups founded between 1985 and 2010 that subsequently received venture financing. We identify ventures whose founding counties experience natural disasters within 12 months of founding using FEMA Major Disaster Declarations. Ventures exposed to disasters at an early stage exhibit higher subsequent failure hazards and no general advantage in follow-on financing, yet show higher IPO hazards in favorable market windows, a pattern consistent with greater responsiveness to opportunities requiring substantial organizational reconfiguration. Descriptive employee-level evidence further documents differences in organizational structure and composition consistent with greater retained fluidity among exposed ventures. Drawing on organization design and imprinting theory, we interpret these patterns as consistent with the possibility that disasters function as forcing environments that entrench early-stage coordination features such as flatness, role fluidity, and broader expertise that would otherwise attenuate as ventures mature. These durable organizational traces may, in turn, shape ventures’ subsequent capacity for reconfiguration. We discuss implications for organizational adaptation, imprinting, entrepreneurial geography, and organizational responses to crises.
