Hair fiber, a unique and complex biological structure, has long been a subject of scientific inquiry and technological advancements. The understanding of the science and technology of hair fiber is essential to develop innovative hair care products and treatments that address various hair-related issues. This chapter provides an overview of the current knowledge on the science and technology of hair fiber. The first part of this chapter focuses on the structural classification and composition of proteins. It examines the molecular components of hair protein such as keratin, melanin pigments, and lipid layers, which contribute to the mechanical and aesthetic properties of hair. The role of genetics and environmental factors in determining hair characteristics and diversity is also explored. This chapter also reveals the chemical and biochemical aspects of hair fiber. It examines the various components of hair, including cuticle, cortex, and medulla, and their role in determining hair's mechanical and aesthetic properties. Also, it explores the role of various chemical treatments, such as coloring and straightening, on the structure and integrity of hair and explains the technological advancements in hair care products and treatments. It discusses the development of innovative techniques for hair conditioning, repair, and styling, including the use of nanotechnology. Furthermore, it gives an overview which presents recent advancements in hair fiber technology. It discusses the development of novel hair care products, including shampoos, conditioners, and styling agents, that aim to improve hair strength, shine, manageability, and protection. Emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology-based applications, are explored for their potential in advancing the field.
