The mixture of oleic acid, water, pelargonic acid and acetic acid was treated with ozone at 0~15℃ before the reaction was fully carried out.The resulting mixture was heated to 85~100℃ and passed with oxygen gas for more 2~3 hours, with using Mn(Ac)2 and CoCl2 as catalysts. Then azelaic acid and pelargonic acid were separated from the end products. The yield of azelaic acid was more than 70%,with purity over 98.4%.Microwave was also discovered to be a good catalytic method for the process.
