Objective To assess the effects of type 2 diabetics individual self-management education guided by HbA 1c calculation value on glycemic control. Methods 60 patients with type 2 diabetes were asked about their basic diabetes knowledge, diet, exercise and medication through questionnaires, and the indices of their glycemic control were measured. Then the HbA 1c calculation value model was set up. These patients were randomly divided into group A (individual self-management education guided by HbA 1c calculation value) and group B (traditional education group), each group containing 30 cases. At the end of the third, sixth and ninth months after intervention, the levels of FPG, PG2h and HbA 1c was measured. At the end of the twelfth month, data were collected in the same way as pre-intervention. Results One year after intervention, the outcome of glycemic control was improved and patients' basic diabetes knowledge score increased in the both groups. The proportion of the patients with increased self-management abilities in group A was higher than that in group B(P0.05). The outcome of glycemic control in group A was better than that in group B(P0.05). Conclusion Individual self-management education guided by HbA 1c calculation value was an effective intervention method for sustaining glycemic control in the patients with type 2 diabetes.
