The vortex-based dimple heat transfer enhancement was introduced as a new heat transfer enhancement and cooling technique. The major characteristics include high heat transfer coefficients, low friction factors and high overall thermal performances. After review of research work on heat transfer enhancement with dimple in the last decade, the heat transfer behavior, flow resistance and vortex structures of dimpled surface were presented, and the influence of parameters, such as dimple shape, depth, and Reynolds number, were also discussed. While the thermal performances of dimples in rotating channel, circular tube and impingement target surface were described and compared with that of trip-strip,this paper provides a visibility into the dimpled surface, which is a new and potential heat transfer enhancement technology with wide applications.
