The overall kinetic distribution of bacterial extracellular vesicles and their inflamatory activity in vivo are described by D. Di Vizio, Y. S. Gho, and co-workers on page 456. Bacterial extracellular vesicles, injected intraperitoneally, quickly distribute to the whole body, where they persist for 6 h and are then gradually eliminated, with minimal residual accumulation in the liver after 24 h. From a functional point of view, outer membrane vesicles induce early and late inflammatory reactions systemically and also in the lung, a distant organ.
