Abstract The K‐absorption of copper in azurite and in some copper systems is studied using a Gauchois‐type X‐ray spectrograph. It is established that copper is in the divalent state and behaves as a cation in azurite. The two structures, B and C, observed in the Cuk edge of the mineral are assigned to the transitions 1s → 2a2u and 1s → 3eu on the basis of the molecular orbital theory.
