This book on the human health disaster caused by arsenic in groundwaters in circum-Himalayan Asia (and many other parts of the world) has been eagerly awaited and is a must-buy for any professional working in any of the many relevant disciplines. A review citing over 700 publications and reports, it is the most comprehensive up-to-date account of the occurrence, origin, health impacts and remediation of global groundwater arsenic hazard.
The three authors have collectively a unique and outstanding combination of expertise and experiences, particularly relevant to Bangladesh, the country most severely affected by this tragedy. Peter Ravenscroft has been one of the leading authorities on the subject since his fieldwork based in Bangladesh in the late 1990s and early 2000s and has co-authored some of the most highly cited scientific papers on the subject. Hugh Brammer's highly productive connection with Bangladesh as a soil and agricultural development advisor extends to over 30 years, whilst Keith Richards is a widely respected physical geographer with extensive publications in fluvial geomorphology, a key discipline for understanding the distribution of arsenic-bearing groundwaters in Bangladesh and elsewhere.
