Switching on emission in Zn(ii) coordination complexes by tempering Namido character

Zn amides are typically weak emitters, while Zn imines can be strongly luminescent. Here, we show how bright emission can be turned on in 4-coordinate Zn complexes by tempering N amido character through resonance.
