patients with diarrhea form of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) were randomized into two groups: one group was treated with loperamide (2 mg, qd) for two weeks,the other with lomotil (1Tab, Tid) for the same course. The stool frequency and its appearance were observed. The overall response rates of loperamide and lomotil were 70% and 26.7% in 24 hours (P0.05),respectively. The pronounced responce rate and the overall response rate of loperamide were 70% and 100%, and those of lomotil were 66.7% and 86.7% in two weeks, respectively.The study has shown that loperamide is more effectivethan lo motil.There was not any side effect in the treatment with loperamide.
