The paper analyse the reasons for the low nitrogen use efficiency(NUE) in China were analyzed from the perspective of the rates of N fertilizer, fertilization methods, indigenous soil N supply and variety. Summed up research progress made internationally and domestically on the approaches to improving the NUE from two aspects of the traditional methods and modern technology. With the development of agricultural production practices, the traditional methods were optimized and assembled as minimizing N application rate with deep placement, split application with precise postponing nitrogen application, fertilizer with water- saving irrigation and balanced fertilization with conservation tillage. Simultaneously, four kinds of new technology such as non- destructive diagnosis, new fertilizer, computer decision support systems and site- specific nutrient management(SSNM) were presented. Future outlook in technologies related to NUE improvement was also discussed.
