Intrusive Noise From Aircrafts, an Experimental Standard To Characterize Airport Noise Within Living Environments

An introductive acoustic assessment focused on experimental standard published by UNI (Italian National Standard Body) in March 2022, UNI/TS 11844:2022, applied inside three homes within one of the most annoyed quartier by air traffic from Airport G. Marconi – Bologna (Italy). Three cases evaluated by simultaneously comparing two adjacent rooms, one with open windows and one with closed windows, analyzing take-off events from Runway 12, which flies over the north-west part of the city. This kind of evaluation, for each position permitted to understand and quantify the nuisance caused to citizens living inside those homes. Although the regulation and its application to airport noise is only a first indicative test, it is already possible to examine through the very first data that it is not obvious that a closed window, whether of poor or fair quality, can remedy by lowering the intrusiveness of aircraft noise. Further insights could be useful both for the development of the standard itself and for its application in the airport and aircraft noise sector.
