摘要
Biochar has the potential to be a highly effective material for controlling odor pollutants due to its exceptional properties, including high porosity, specific surface area, and rich surface functional groups. This chapter examines the impact of the physical and chemical properties of biochar on odor removal and the different ways biochar can be applied to control odors. Biochar can serve as an adsorbent to remove odorous gases or be added during the composting process to curb unpleasant odors. When biochar is used in an adsorption-based removal mechanism, the structural properties and surface chemistry of biochar are crucial factors. The adsorption of malodorous pollutants, whether organic or inorganic, occurs through a combination of physical and chemical adsorption. In the case of biochar as a compost additive, besides removing odors through adsorption, it can enhance aeration and decrease odor emissions by lowering the bulk density of the compost.
