Displays and Vertical‐Cavity Surface‐Emitting Lasers

This chapter reviews the technology of displays that could survive in the future based on the author's forecast, and thin-film transistors could help out as their drivers. It introduces the history of the invention of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) while reviewing its research and development by featuring host technologies that contributed to the realization of usable devices, including display systems. Finally, this chapter discusses the displays that use semiconductor lasers, including VCSELs.
