An Experimental Study on the Removal Efficiency and Air Purification Performance of Air Purifiers with Air Purifying Plants

Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. Understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can mitigate the risk of indoor health concerns. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the combined performance of small air purifier in combination with air purifying plants. The CADR (clean air delivery rate) was performed according to the test standards, by combining two small air purifiers and three plants with an air purifying effect. When the two air purifiers without performance certification were operated in the rated operation mode, it was found that all of them did not meet the minimum requirement. Although some air purifying plants had the effect, the particle removal efficiency of the combined air purifiers and air purifying plants, which operated in the rated operation mode, were half the level compared to the product with performance certification. In the market of the air purifier, consumers must be protected from air purifiers with air purifying plants, that advertise their effectiveness without performance verification. Although air purifying plants do not remove fine dust, it is clear that they are effective in improving indoor air quality. Thus, it is necessary to develop an air purifier that can improve the air purification ability of plants.
