The presence of ice on pavements poses a significant impediment to both traffic capacity and driving safety. Traditional anti-icing approaches negatively influence pavement structure and environment and requires immediate improvement. The pavement superhydrophobic coating (SC) is an emerging and potential initiative anti-icing approach. Nowadays, there are many achievements in pavement SC's self-preparation and performance verification. However, the evaluation methods of the SC's core properties, the wettability and anti-icing property, are diverse, and the property comparison of different types of SC are lacking. These all limit the further development of this new anti-icing approach. This paper reviews the developments and challenges in the widespread adoption of pavement SC according to these two core properties. It is showing that all the SCs prepared mentioned in the literatures could obtain the superhydrophobic and anti-icing properties, and the recognized standards are urgently needed to put pavement SC into more pavement anti-icing applications.
