Experiences and Perspectives of Nursing Students and Educators on Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Education: A Qualitative Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming nursing education by reshaping how knowledge is delivered, acquired, and applied. Synthesizing qualitative evidence is essential for guiding ethical and human-centered AI integration. PURPOSE: To interpret and synthesize qualitative evidence on nursing students' and educators' experiences with AI-based educational interventions. METHODS: Ten databases were searched. Methodological quality was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Data were inductively coded and synthesized through interpretive abstraction, and confidence in findings was evaluated using ConQual. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies were included. A total of 141 themes and 169 subthemes were synthesized into 5 domains: facilitating deep learning and clinical reasoning, fostering professional confidence and identity formation, cultivating ethical awareness and critical reflection, integrating technology to enhance pedagogical effectiveness, and navigating emotional and cognitive challenges in AI-mediated learning. CONCLUSIONS: AI enhances engagement, reasoning, confidence, and ethical reflection, yet concerns remain regarding ethics, data security, and faculty preparedness.
