Hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), is the main mineral component of bone. Hydroxyapatite is widely used as a bone graft to repair bone damage in the field of dentistry and orthopedics. HA material gives insufficient radiographic appearances, therefore itcauses problems inmonitoring of bone formation after surgery, implant monitoring, and diagnosis of implant failure. Zirconia (ZrO2) was added to the bone filler material to enhance radiopacitythat can be shownthrough the X-ray imaging The purpose of this study was to determine the radiopacity and radiodensity effect of adding zirconia to the hydroxyapatite.
The main materialof this study are: HA thatsynthesized from Calcite (PT Omya, Mojokerto, Surabaya) and 3 mol% yttrium-oxide partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ). Research subjectsare24 cylindrical zirconia hydroxyapatite composite thatdivided into 4 groups (HA + zirconia0%, 30%, 40%, and 50%). Radiopacity and radiodensity measurement using Image J software (Research Services Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA). Statistical analysis used was Kruskal-Wallis Test and One-way Anova.
Results of this study showed that the addition of zirconia on hydroxyapatite with various concentrations have effects on radiopacity(p <0.05) and there are significant differences in the concentration of the addition of zirconia into the hydroxyapatite on radiodensity(p <0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there is radiopacity and radiodensity enhancement on the concentration addition of zirconia (30%, 40%, and 50%) on hydroxyapatite
