Rotation of the plane of polarization of light at the free surface of a liquid crystal

AbstractLight that is transmitted through an ordered sample of nematic liquid crystal, doped with certain dyes, is partially polarized. Results are presented which imply that the plane of polarization is rotated by a small angle in a thin layer at the free surface when light is transmitted upward.
