Aspects of Pain

This chapter will review acute and chronic pain, complex conditions that can catastrophically impact functioning and quality of life. Chronic pain is the leading cause of disease burden and disability globally. Opioid analgesics play a role in treating pain yet but carry significant side effects, including the risk of dependence and addiction. In this chapter, we review basic pain anatomy, assessment, and treatment approaches. Health professionals should be aware of the recommended multidisciplinary approach to treating pain. Successfully treating pain requires skill, empathy, and staying current within the medical literature.
